The Texas politician was born Rafael Edward Cruz in Canada. His father, also named Rafael, was born and raised in Cuba, where he opposed the Batista regime, and left the island in the ‘50s to attend the University of Texas at Austin. In his move to the U.S., Cruz’s father received political asylum after his student visa expired. The Cruz papa left his family in Canada in 1974, marking his return to Texas. That same year, Cruz’s parents made up and the family relocated to Houston. It was there that the Texas senator began going by “Ted” instead of Rafael when he was 13 years old. Despite his family’s history, Cruz has been vocal about his stance against immigration, particularly from Latino countries.
