A large part of the current applicants in Spain come from Venezuela (35%), Colombia (25%), Honduras (5.8%), Nicaragua (5%) and El Salvador (4%), a profile very different from that of the Syrians, Afghans, or Iraqis arriving in Germany, Greece, and France. “Most of the asylum seekers in Spain do not flee from a war in the traditional sense, but flee from structural violence,” says Garcés-Mascareñas.
