Since 2007, traditional and independent media in Venezuela have been severely censored and repressed, leading to the reduction of separation of powers. Although digital and social media have proven to be essential in overcoming the Venezuelan regime’s dominance of print and broadcast media, they have also been used for repression, leading to “networked authoritarianism.” Internet blockades and censorship have silenced free and diverse thought, opposition politicians, human rights defenders, and activists. The persecution and criminalization of dissident voices have established a surveillance state, and identification systems have discriminated between Maduro’s critics and supporters.
