In 2019 the international recognition of the National Assembly speaker in Venezuela boosted the expectation of democratic transition. Three years after, however, Maduro is still usurping the Presidency amidst a complex political and humanitarian crisis. This presentation summarizes a conference at Yale Law School that explains the political and economic evolution in Venezuela between 2017 and 2022, indicating some of the causes that could have led to the failure of the 2019 transition plan.
