The Road to 2024 in Venezuela: A Conversation with María Corina Machado

Cortesía

The democratic opposition in Venezuela faces significant and mounting challenges as it approaches presidential elections which should be held in 2024. The Maduro regime continues its repression, through arbitrary arrests, torture, disregard for constitutional norms, and employs mis- and disinformation to cloud the media space. Opposition negotiations with the regime over electoral reforms and freeing political prisoners remain stalled, and there are currently no conditions for holding free and fair elections. In this context, the United States and the international community must maintain pressure on Maduro and provide support to the opposition. This event will feature María Corina Machado, former Member of the National Assembly, and currently a candidate in the opposition’s primary election. Machado will discuss the primary process, necessary reforms, and the state of play in Venezuela. The discussion will also explore options for the United States and allies to support and protect those on the ground campaigning for democratic change. This event is made possible through general support to CSIS. Wacht video-> CSIS
