According to director Braun, “¡Viva Maestro! began as an exploration of the power and beauty of Gustavo Dudamel’s music making and an affirmation of his belief in the transformative power of art. When we set out we had no idea of the many ways Gustavo himself and those values would be tested. Or how the film would, in a fashion that seems especially attuned to our current moment, explore art and music’s role in a time of geopolitical crisis.. by Clarence Moye. Full Text -> AwardDialy

Cuando partimos, no teníamos idea de las muchas formas en que el propio Gustavo y esos valores serían probados. O cómo la película, de una manera que parece especialmente acorde con nuestro momento actual, exploraría el papel del arte y la música en una época de crisis geopolítica.

For Dudamel, the trauma of COVID-19 turned personal: ‘I am not the Gustavo of 2010’ https://onvenezuela.com/for-dudamel-the-trauma-of-covid-19-turned-personal-i-am-not-the-gustavo-of-2010/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=for-dudamel-the-trauma-of-covid-19-turned-personal-i-am-not-the-gustavo-of-2010 Sat, 30 Oct 2021 11:24:48 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=11881

Dudamel did lose family and friends. His trauma proved life-changing. His has been, for as long as he can remember, a life of orchestras. As a little boy in his hometown — Barquisimeto, Venezuela — he began playing violin in a children’s orchestra that was part of Venezuela’s El Sistema education program. He took up conducting in his early teens. He had never, for a second, stopped. Dudamel had been thinking about taking a sabbatical just before one was unexpectedly forced upon him, turning his world upside down and challenging his engrained optimism. He lost to COVID-19, he said, some of his closest family in Venezuela, including his grandmother, who helped to raise him. By Mark Swed. Full Text ->Los AngelesTimes

Yet the storied life of Gustavo Dudamel took some different turns in the half-decade leading up to his 40th birthday last January. No longer welcome in Nicolás Maduro’s Venezuela after he belatedly criticized the government in 2017, he is increasingly setting his sights on Europe, taking out Spanish citizenship. Opera will play a bigger role in his future now that he signed on as music director of the Paris Opera, starting in August. He is also a changed man on the podium, no longer as wild in gesture as he was, learning to get more results with less motion. By Richard S. Ginell. Full Text -> Classical Voice
