Canada is looking to restore ties with President Nicolás Maduro’s socialist government in Venezuela, falling in line with other allies after a push to install a rival leader collapsed. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has long opposed Maduro’s regime, sanctioning the president in 2017 before many other Group of Seven peers. Canada enthusiastically backed the US-led effort to install former National Assembly President Juan Guaidó as Venezuela’s leader, but that effort failed and Guaidó was ousted by the opposition in January. Canada’s international isolation has never been more apparent https://onvenezuela.com/canadas-international-isolation-has-never-been-more-apparent/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=canadas-international-isolation-has-never-been-more-apparent Thu, 28 Sep 2023 15:08:00 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=16663

The revelations by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Parliament on Monday, essentially accusing the Indian government of the assassination of Gudwara leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, has set off a major foreign policy crisis in Canada. There are many dimensions of this story that will be explored in the coming days, weeks, and months. They include the actual nature of the intelligence that points to Indian government culpability, Canada’s diplomatic relationship with India (both leading up to and after the assassination), and the operation of its national security services, especially with regard to their unsuccessful attempt to warn Nijjar of the impending danger. However, one aspect that is already fairly apparent is Canada’s waning diplomatic clout internationally. The response by our allies has been a far cry from forceful support. While this may have come as a shock to some, it is a culmination of several threads in Canadian foreign policy that have been discussed in this column over the past year. By Richard Shimooka. Canada previously helped lead a push to delegitimize Venezuela’s dictatorship and recognize dissident leader Juan Guaidó as the country’s head of government. But Cameron* said after little success, leaders must now decide how much they can work with the regime. “One has to be pragmatic,” he said. “You no longer have a figure inside of Venezuela who can claim that legitimacy, so it’s time for a reset of that policy; it’s time to look beyond Guaidó.” Cameron said a shift to authoritarianism in Guatemala and El Salvador raises further questions, but he said stronger democracies like Colombia can partner with Canada.By Dylan Robertson.

Anaida Poilievre, a Venezuelan that could be the First Lady of Canada https://onvenezuela.com/anaida-poilievre-a-venezuelan-that-could-be-the-first-lady-of-canada/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=anaida-poilievre-a-venezuelan-that-could-be-the-first-lady-of-canada Tue, 13 Sep 2022 12:08:00 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=15966

The unorthodox nuptials were perhaps a signal to the world that this was not a run-of-the-mill Conservative political wife, but one with her own unique character — and potential to be an asset for the party as it strives to shake loose the Liberal hold on power. Anaida solidified that image Saturday night in an animated speech introducing her husband — and herself — after he won the Tory leadership race. She evoked her roots in Venezuela, migration to a new country and hard-scrabble upbringing in Montreal, painting a portrait of the type of salt-of-the-earth Canadian that Poilievre seems to view as his natural constituency. “My father, he went from wearing business suits and managing a bank to jumping on the back of a pickup truck to collect fruits and vegetables, because that’s what he had to do to feed his family,” said Anaida. “There is no greater dignity than to provide for your own family.” By Tom Blackwell.

The sea change in his fortunes began far from Caracas. In Canada, Freeland moved from the global affairs portfolio and her successor, Francois-Philippe Champagne, had more pressing priorities than forcing an obscure Latin American dictator from power. It has been a legitimate criticism of the Trudeau government that it has too many priorities and a short attention span. The effort to oust Maduro was yet another example that it is far more focused on what’s new and far less interested in following through with initiatives already launched. By John Ivison. To summarize: in order to punish its longtime enemy, which it tried to be friends with, but is now quite sure is an enemy again (Russia), the U.S. turned to a friend that should be an enemy (Saudi Arabia), which won’t talk to the Americans because they’re helping a common enemy (Iran), while negotiating with another enemy (Venezuela), even though it’s friends with the enemy that started this whole crisis (Putin). Got that? By Jesse Kline. Full Text ->Winnipeg Sun

¿Entienden?

“US now looking to replace Russian barrels with Venezuelan? You can’t make this stuff up – desperate times require desperate measures. A reminder of the folly of energy policy over the past decade.
