In recent decades, they [the Yanomami] have suffered from a growing invasion by Brazilian miners, known locally as garimpeiros, who cross the border with heavy machinery to extract gold and other minerals. The result has been widespread deforestation, the pollution of major rivers, and human rights violations against the Indigenous communities. These problems appear to be getting worse, according to a report from SOS Orinoco, a Venezuelan environmental advocacy group. By Maxwell Radwin. Full Text ->Mongabay

Is Venezuela Destroying the Amazon Rainforest, One of The Seven Nature Wonder forests? https://onvenezuela.com/is-venezuela-destroying-the-amazon-rainforest-one-of-the-seven-nature-wonder-forests/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=is-venezuela-destroying-the-amazon-rainforest-one-of-the-seven-nature-wonder-forests Fri, 13 May 2022 10:43:38 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=14596

The most obvious effect of mining activity in the Amazon rainforest is the degradation of the ecosystem. Poisoning is occurring due to the mercury used in its exploitation. This is also illegal. It not only affects the environment, but also the people, as happened with the Pemón people, which has triggered a health crisis due to the resurgence of malaria. Venezuela went from being an example in its eradication to being the country with the most cases in Latin America. This is largely due to the pools of blood gold mines where the mosquito that transmits the disease breeds. By Eduardo Zalovich. Full text -> ElAmerican

Venezuelan Tainted Gold https://onvenezuela.com/venezuelan-tainted-gold/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=venezuelan-tainted-gold Sun, 01 May 2022 12:12:18 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=14400

Venezuela has reserves of highly valued resources, including gold. Most gold mining in Venezuela’s southern states is illegal, and much of the gold is smuggled out of Venezuela and laundered into the national gold of “transit countries,” like Colombia, Guyana, and Brazil, before being sold to companies in the US, Canada, the EU, and other countries. In 2020, Human Rights Watch documented how residents of Venezuela’s Bolívar state suffered horrific abuses at the hands of armed groups, including gangs called “syndicates” and armed groups from Colombia that control illegal gold mines. These groups seem to operate largely with government acquiescence or involvement to maintain social control. Abuses that continue to take place include amputations, shootings, and killings. The armed groups operate and commit abuses elsewhere on the Venezuela-Colombia border as well. By Tamara Taraciuk Broner and Martina Rapido Ragozzino Full Text -> HRW

Venezuela sent gold to Mali in 2020 via Russian-owned planes to exchange for euros and U.S. dollars that President Nicolas Maduro’s government used to remain afloat despite U.S. sanctions, an opposition representative said on Wednesday. Julio Borges, designated by opposition leader Juan Guaido as his chief overseas envoy, told reporters that the gold was refined in Mali and then resold primarily in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to allow for Maduro’s administration to obtain foreign currency cash.
