Venezuela’s autocratic leader Nicolás Maduro, who last year signed on to a road map for free and fair elections this year, has decisively broken with the agreement, using coercion and duplicity to silence critics and the opposition. The Biden administration vowed to reimpose sanctions if this happened. It has no choice but to make good on this threat. Editorial Board. Full Text -> The Washington Post

Venezuela: Negotiating with Dictatorships https://onvenezuela.com/venezuela-negotiating-with-dictatorships/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=venezuela-negotiating-with-dictatorships Thu, 08 Feb 2024 10:24:00 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=16956

Negotiating with a dictatorship is often an unpleasant task whose outcome is almost certain to be disappointment. Dictatorships only think about ways to perpetuate themselves, and regardless of the commitments they make at a given moment, they are always ready to violate agreements if they feel their status is threatened. The regime of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela is currently demonstrating this by strongly undermining the “Barbados Agreements,” which could lead to the re-imposition of economic sanctions that were lifted at some point. U.S. is looking into Maduro’s attempt to toss aside results of opposition’s primary vote https://onvenezuela.com/u-s-is-looking-into-maduros-attempt-to-toss-aside-results-of-oppositions-primary-vote/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=u-s-is-looking-into-maduros-attempt-to-toss-aside-results-of-oppositions-primary-vote Thu, 02 Nov 2023 10:34:00 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=16768

The U.S. government is evaluating efforts by the Venezuelan government to keep opposition primary winner María Corina Machado from competing in next year’s presidential election, a move that could prompt Washington to reinstate the recently lifted sanctions against Caracas’ socialist regime, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday. Blinken made the comments in Congress in response to a question from Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who expressed concern that strongman Nicolas Maduro in just a few days had scuttled the deal his regime had reached with the Venezuelan opposition earlier this month. The Venezuela Supreme Court on Tuesday suspended the presidential primary process for the party challenging the country’s socialist government, which has controls the high court – jeopardizing a deal the Biden administration made on easing restricts on Venezuelan oil and gas in exchange for the ruling party’s promise to allow competitive elections.  The State Department vowed to reimpose the sanctions if the government of President Nicolas Maduro does not lift bans on some opposition candidates and free political prisoners and “wrongfully detained” Americans by the end of November, according to Reuters. The deal appears to have collapsed just two weeks after it was reached. “We urge Nicolas Maduro and his representatives to uphold the commitments they made at the signing of the political roadmap agreement,” a State Department spokesperson said Tuesday.By Kevin Killough.
