En la tarde del 29 de junio de 1919 el doctor José Gregorio Hernández caminaba por la esquina de Amadores (La Pastora), después de bajarse de un tranvía, cuando fue atropellado por un vehículo. Se desplomó de espaldas y su occipital cayó justo en el filo de la acera. Lo llevaron al hospital Vargas y allí falleció, a los 55 años. Fue enterrado en el Cementerio General del Sur y en 1975 sus restos fueron trasladados a la Iglesia de la Candelaria, en Caracas. Courtesy translation -> On the afternoon of June 29, 1919, Dr. José Gregorio Hernández was walking around the corner of Amadores (La Pastora), after getting off a tram, when he was hit by a vehicle. He collapsed on his back and his occiput landed right on the edge of the sidewalk. They took him to the Vargas hospital and there he died, at the age of 55. He was buried in the General Cemetery of the South and in 1975 his remains were transferred to the Church of La Candelaria, in Caracas. His hometown, Isnotú (Trujillo), is a place of pilgrimage for thousands of devotees.
