UNHCR Venezuela Quarterly Report | Jan – Mar 2023 https://onvenezuela.com/unhcr-venezuela-quarterly-report-jan-mar-2023/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=unhcr-venezuela-quarterly-report-jan-mar-2023 Thu, 01 Jun 2023 12:03:11 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=16576

In the first quarter of the year, UNHCR spearheaded the launch of a reintegration pilot project in the northcentral of Miranda, selecting three communities in the sprawling informal settlement of Petare, to the east of Caracas, to implement a number of activities designed to support the sustainable reintgration in society of those Venezuelans who have chosen to return to the country. UNHCR is also supporting a second reintegration pilot in the western state of Tachira that is being implemented under the leadership of IOM in two border communities in the Municipality of Junin and in an urban community in the city of San Cristobal.

UNHCR also accompanied a mission by the Resident Coordinator/Humanitarian Coordinator to the southwestern state of Amazonas which provided the opportunity to showcase some of its more recent projects: the Communal Center for Women in Puerto Ayacucho, 400 solar reflectors installed in the Municipality of Autana, the Centre for the Comprehensive Care for Victims of Human Trafficking and Gender-Based Violence (CAFIM) in Puerto Ayacucho, the local Agricultural Technical School (ETA) supported jointly with FAO and UNICEF as a pilot for income generating opportunities for students. “Digital Authoritarianism” in Venezuela https://onvenezuela.com/digital-authoritarianism-in-venezuela/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=digital-authoritarianism-in-venezuela Thu, 25 May 2023 13:58:00 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=16560

Since 2007, traditional and independent media in Venezuela have been severely censored and repressed, leading to the reduction of separation of powers. Although digital and social media have proven to be essential in overcoming the Venezuelan regime’s dominance of print and broadcast media, they have also been used for repression, leading to “networked authoritarianism.” Internet blockades and censorship have silenced free and diverse thought, opposition politicians, human rights defenders, and activists. The persecution and criminalization of dissident voices have established a surveillance state, and identification systems have discriminated between Maduro’s critics and supporters.

EU Observers to Release Venezuela Report Remotely Amid Tensions https://onvenezuela.com/eu-observers-to-release-venezuela-report-remotely-amid-tensions/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=eu-observers-to-release-venezuela-report-remotely-amid-tensions Fri, 18 Feb 2022 14:03:43 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=13533

The European electoral observation mission to Venezuela will present its final report remotely, opting not return to the country after tensions with President Nicolas Maduro spilled over last year. The European Union observers, who fanned out across the country for the Nov. 21 regional elections, said in a statement released Thursday that they will hold a virtual presentation of their findings on Feb. 22. That’s a u-turn from what the mission’s head, Isabel Santos, had said in November, when she pledged to bring the report to the country in person by late January or early February.  By Andreina Itriago Acosta. Why Twitter Suspended 277 Chavista Accounts https://onvenezuela.com/12733-2/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=12733-2 Mon, 20 Dec 2021 12:01:48 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=12733

The suspension of 277 accounts by Twitter in proportion to the aforementioned indicators reflects that there is indeed manipulation and domination of the political conversation by the Maduro government. Although this effort exposes and generates consequences against the mechanisms of manipulation of the ruling party in the socio-political conversation on Twitter in Venezuela, unfortunately, it still seems to be insufficient in terms of proportion, speed and scope of disinformation on Twitter.

UNHCR Colombia Factsheet, November 2020 https://onvenezuela.com/unhcr-colombia-factsheet-november-2020/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=unhcr-colombia-factsheet-november-2020 Thu, 11 Feb 2021 13:14:47 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=7500

While Colombia’s asylum system has offered protection to a small but growing number of Venezuelans, many Venezuelans seek to regularize their stay through the Special Stay Permit (PEP), which enables access to legal employment. The PEP currently allows over 708,000 Venezuelans to reside legally in Colombia for up to two years with access to basic services and the labour market. Despite this high number, some 56% Venezuelans in Colombia find themselves in an irregular situation and thus more vulnerable to protection risks. Full Text -> ReliefWeb

In October, Colombian authorities pushed 5,000 Venezuelans back into Venezuelan territory at the Colombia-Venezuela border. The increased inflow of refugees and migrants following the reactivation of economic activities in Colombia led the Government to increase controls at the border, specifically at 17 irregular border crossings – commonly known as “trochas”. Interactive Map: Degrees of Diplomatic Recognition of Guaidó and Maduro https://onvenezuela.com/interactive-map-degrees-of-diplomatic-recognition-of-guaido-and-maduro/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=interactive-map-degrees-of-diplomatic-recognition-of-guaido-and-maduro Fri, 16 Oct 2020 14:28:31 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=6096

In this context, it is valuable to take a step back to assess where the international community currently stands on Juan Guaidó, and what international diplomacy with his coalition truly looks like. These dynamics have important implications for the future of Guaidó’s international support, and for how the international community will act following January 5. We have prepared the following interactive map to demonstrate the extent of Guaidó’s diplomatic relations abroad.* By Kristen Martinez-Gugerli. Full Text -> VenezuelanBlog
