Venezuela secured a place in the Copa America quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Mexico, leading to Jamaica’s tournament exit. Salomon Rondon’s penalty kick in the 57th minute was the match’s only goal, placing Venezuela at the top of Group B with six points from two games. Mexico still has a chance to move to the knockout rounds if they win against Ecuador in their final group game. During the match, Mexico’s Orbelin Pineda missed a crucial late penalty which could have equalized the game. Earlier, Mexico’s Julian Quinones conceded a penalty, leading to Rondon’s goal. The day’s events also sealed Jamaica’s fate in the tournament following their 3-1 loss to Ecuador. Ecuador initially built a 2-0 lead, courtesy of a Kasey Palmer own goal and a penalty converted by 17-year-old Kendry Paez. Jamaica’s veteran striker Michail Antonio reduced the deficit early in the second half, but strong claims for a penalty were rejected 15 minutes from the end. Ecuador made it 3-1 in stoppage time with Alan Minda scoring as Jamaica pressed for an equalizer. The match saw Ecuador initially lead from a deflected own goal by Palmer and later doubled their lead through a penalty awarded after a VAR review. Despite Jamaica’s efforts to come back, Minda’s late goal confirmed Ecuador’s victory. Original text by AFP, published in ->Microsoft

Venezuelan poet Rafael Cadenas wins the Cervantes Prize https://onvenezuela.com/venezuelan-poet-rafael-cadenas-wins-the-cervantes-prize/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=venezuelan-poet-rafael-cadenas-wins-the-cervantes-prize Fri, 28 Apr 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=16493

The Cervantes Prize is widely regarded as the most prestigious literary award in the Spanish-speaking world. It is awarded annually to a writer who has made significant contributions to Spanish-language literature, and has been won by some of the greatest authors in history, including Jorge Luis Borges, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Octavio Paz. In 2019, the award was presented to the Venezuelan poet Rafael Cadenas, marking the first time that a writer from Venezuela had won the prize.

Cadenas was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, in 1930, and began his career as a poet in the 1950s. He has since become one of the most widely respected poets in the Spanish-speaking world, known for his spare, introspective style and his exploration of themes such as identity, solitude, and the human condition. His poetry has been translated into numerous languages, and he has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the National Prize for Literature in Venezuela (1985), the Octavio Paz International Poetry and Essay Prize (2018), and the Reina Sofía Prize for Ibero-American Poetry (2018).

The decision to award the Cervantes Prize to Cadenas was met with widespread acclaim from the literary world. The jury praised him as a “poet of extreme height” and praised his “mastery of language, depth of thought, and poetic innovation.” They also noted his “commitment to human values, his criticism of power, and his defense of freedom and justice,” all of which they described as “essential values of the Cervantes Prize.”

In his acceptance speech, Cadenas thanked the jury and spoke of the importance of poetry in a troubled world. “Poetry is not only the search for beauty,” he said, “but also a way of confronting the ugliness of the world, of criticizing power, of questioning authority, and of giving voice to the silenced.” He also spoke of his love for Venezuela, a country that has been beset by political and economic turmoil in recent years. “I receive this prize as a gift not only for myself but for Venezuela,” he said. “For a country that has suffered so much, but that remains alive, creative, and hopeful.”

The awarding of the Cervantes Prize to Rafael Cadenas is a testament to the power of poetry to transcend borders and to the enduring importance of literature in our world. As we confront the challenges of the present moment, we would do well to remember Cadenas’s words: that poetry can be a force for good, a way of shining a light in the darkness, and a means of speaking truth to power.

Venezuelan cacao has “different characteristics and specifications” that depend on the region of the country where it is cultivated, said Enrique Flores, owner of an exporting company – Grupo Kacaoil – that was founded in 2017. “Cacao doesn’t taste the same anywhere you go,” Flores told Efe. According to the business leader, Venezuela’s “fino de aroma” cacao is the key factor that makes the country’s chocolate among the best in the world. “The genetic makeup of Venezuelan cacao is what lends taste and aroma … to the chocolates,” Flores said. Indeed, he said chocolate producers in other countries use Venezuelan cacao’s intense flavors to enrich their products. By Carlos Seijas Meneses. Full Text -> LaPrensaLatina

Yekuana Baskets Make It to Milan’s Salone Satellite https://onvenezuela.com/yekuana-baskets-make-it-to-milans-salone-satellite/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=yekuana-baskets-make-it-to-milans-salone-satellite Fri, 06 May 2022 11:40:08 +0000 https://onvenezuela.com/?p=14504

The basket is essential for us. Everything we use every day is still being weaved, because we need it. That hasn’t been lost. I also believe that weaving the baskets is our own millenary identity, not invented or appropriated, something that came from this specific place in Venezuela. This is why the Yekuana baskets are going to be exhibited in one of the world’s most prestigious fairs for young designers, Salone Satellite di Milano, in June. And Dawa is going with them, invited by the curator, NYC-based Venezuelan designer Rodolfo Agrella. By Kaoru Yonekura. Full Text -> CaracasChronicles
