Hamas and Israel have separately announced that a deal has been reached to release 50 hostages held by the Palestinian movement in the Gaza Strip in exchange for a temporary ceasefire in Israel’s ongoing campaign against the group. The deal was later confirmed Qatar and the United States as well. President Joe Biden said in a White House statement late Tuesday that the agreement should result in the release of U.S. citizens, backing up details provided earlier in the day by a senior official of his administration, though neither Hamas nor Israel made specific mention of U.S. nationals.By Tom O’Connor.
